 Portrait painting of Frederick Layton,
a meat packer and philanthropist from Milwaukee,
by Eastman Johnson (1893).

  1. Participating in the Milwaukee Art Museum’s docent training program, I learned about a portrait of Frederick Layton by Eastman Johnson. Layton established Milwaukee’s first art gallery.

No matter how many times I looked at Layton’s portrait, all I could see was THAT overcoat, (which he forgot at Johnson’s studio). Somehow Layton’s coat works like camouflage, he disappears, but the coat remains.

I hoped for the same result.
